The Mpohor District Assembly in the Western Region is to establish cocoa and oil palm factories under the ‘One-District-One-Factory’ initiative of the government.
It forms part of the campaign pledge to create employment opportunities to alleviate the economic woes of residents and improving their living conditions with massive infrastructural development and social interventions.
Ignatius Mensah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Mpohor, disclosed this during the highlight of the government’s flagship programmes at a town hall meeting at Mpohor.
It was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Information in conjunction with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development as part of government’s efforts to explain policies, programmes and projects to the public.
According to Mr Mensah, “under the ‘Planting for Export and Rural Development’, 98,000 seedlings have been supplied to farmers at Ayiem and 150,000 cocoa seedlings supplied to farmers at Adum Banson with 150 youth employed to commence work on November 1,2018 under the National Builders Corps.
“Under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture afforestation project, 550 youths have been engaged for green Ghana with 10 people from the district employed by the Ghana Railway Company, 600 workers engaged in cocoa improved programme with nine others engaged in the local government sector of the assembly.
“On developmental projects, the assembly has completed a number of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, as well as the drilling and construction of mechanised boreholes while a water and sanitation facility is 60 per cent complete,” Mr Mensah noted.
Alex Kofi Agyekum, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor, used the occasion to donate 22 hair dryers to 22 hairdressers who had undergone training to initiate their businesses which brings to 53, the number of hair dryers given to hairdressers and seamstresses in the area also given 97 sewing machines as start-ups.
He assured of sustaining assistance to individuals in apprenticeship training to become self-sufficient to mitigate unemployment and acquired a van for nurses in the health sector as well as construction of nurses quarters at Angoe.
Nana Kwaw Entsie II, the Paramount Chief of Mpohor, appealed to his subjects to stay abreast with the government’s policies and programmes and join in the effort to ensure their realisation. -GNA
