The chiefs of Pusiga in the Upper East Region have pledged support for the government’s flagship programmes geared to improve living standards.
They said Planting for Food and Jobs, Nations Builders Corps, Free Senior High School, One-District-One-Factory, One-Constituency-One-million dollars and One-Village-One-Dam, are viable programmes that would ameliorate poverty and would work hard to make them sustainable.
The chiefs made the pledge at a town hall meeting at Pusiga, organised by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with the Information Service Department to elaborate on government policies and programmes being executed to make positive impact on the residents.
Naba Ibrahim Ayomah, the chief of Pusiga, who spoke on behalf of the chiefs, noted that government’s flagship programmes had supported residents to expand agriculture production this year and yields from their farms.
“Issues such as smuggling and petty stealing have reduced, while employment increased because many of the youth engaged in agriculture activities this year and busy to think of looking for jobs elsewhere reducing migration from the area to the southern sector.
“We commend the government for the construction of 1,000 metric tonnes agriculture warehouse at Pusiga to compliment the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and appeal to stakeholders to support sustainability of the programme,” Naba Ayomah said.
Zubeiru Abdulai, the District Chief Executive, noted that the district was successful in the implementation of the livelihood empowerment programmes, improved education through teaching and learning, enrolment, infrastructure and restructured the school feeding programme and allocated GH¢500,000 for the construction of a three-unit classroom block in some communities in the area.
“The district has implemented a number of key projects to uplift the health status including construction of a maternity ward and supply of clinical equipment to the Kulungugu Health Centre to facilitate quality health delivery” and asks land owners to release lands for the district to embark on development projects towards the wellbeing of the community.
Mr Benin Issifu, the Upper East Regional Information Officer, said the purpose of the meeting was to allow duty bearers to elaborate policies and programmes executed or were yet to be done to the citizenry for them to participate effectively in decision-making process, so as to enable them make inputs for effective democratic governance. -GNA
