A five-member National Planning Committee (NPC) was inaugurated last Friday in Accra to spearhead activities of the 2019 Africa Security and Safety (ASAS) Awards.
Chaired by Mr Osei Bonsu Dickson, a Chief Legal Advisor at the National Security, the event will be hosted by Ghana in March 2019.
Other members include Madam Akosua Adjei Ameyaw, events coordinator for Centre for Strategic and Defence Studies (CSDC), Mr Edwin Kusi-Appiah, secretary (CSDC), Mr Emmanuel Gaisie, Programme Coordinator CDSC and Mr Elliot Yaw Acquah.
ASAS Awards is an award scheme which celebrates outstanding achievements of organisations and individuals within and outside Africa.
In particular, it presents a platform to recognise individuals and organisations that play significant role in the development of the security and safety sector, while recognising past and emerging actors within the sector.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Deputy Director at the Ministry of Aviation (MoA), Mr Cephas Adjei Mensah said primarily the mandate of the committee was to ensure that an enabling environment was created for security and safety experts to come together to source products, share experience and gain the knowledge needed to address current and emerging security and safety challenges.
He said the choice of the members was based on competence, experience and resourcefulness.
Mr Mensah complimented the efforts of security personnel to the development of the nation’s democratic system, adding that it was only proper that a befitting programme was put in place to officially recognise and show the country’s appreciation to them and other security workers who have distinguished themselves in various fields.
Mr Dickson, on behalf of the other committee members, pledged to work hard to mobilise the necessary resources for a successful event.
