Mr.Kwaku Ofori Asiamah – Minister of Transport
The Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has directed investigation into allegations of impropriety at the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA).
A statement signed and issued in Accra by the sector minister, and copied the Ghanaian Times, said the board of directors of the GMA was to undertake the investigations and report the outcomes to him for the necessary action.
“My attention has been drawn to a number of allegations against the Director-General of the GMA, Mr. Kwame Owusu, which have gone viral on social media.
“As the sector minister with oversight responsibility over the Ghana Maritime Authority, I wish to indicate that I have directed the Board of the Authority to investigate the allegations and report to me for necessary action,” the statement added.
The statement, however, did not indicate the timelines of the investigation.
In a post which went viral on social media, controversial musician Kwame A-Plus posted a document which showed a request made by the Director of Administration, for the payment of GH?10,652 to Luxe Suites Hotel for the cost of food and drinks for eight people at a meeting.
The GMA, in an earlier statement, described as misleading the publications alleging that the Authority spent GH?10, 625.05 on eight persons in a single meeting describing it “as a misrepresentation of facts”.
It explained that the memo making the rounds had been doctored by the “writing of 8 persons” besides “Minute 2” as contained in the said memo.
“The amount quoted in the memo was the food for different meetings (management and stakeholders) held on October31, 2017, November 6, 2017 and November 8, 2017 and couldn’t have been for eight (8) persons in a single meeting as purported in the publication,” the statement said.
It said members for stakeholders meeting alone number well over 40 at a sitting aside the management.
“From the above, it is clearly evident that the amount could not have been the cost of food for eight persons in a meeting as being portrayed,” he said, adding that “the Authority in due course will address all related issues.”
