Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum,Deputy Minister of Education
The Deputy Minister in-charge of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has appealed to the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) to support the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
He said the support should be through the provision of school infrastructure and contribution towards curriculum activities as well as teaching and learning.
Dr Adutwum made the appeal at the maiden National Education Forum held in Accra recently.
It had the theme; “Free SHS: the role of parent in sustainable implementation of the policy”.
He said although government has instituted strategic measures to address infrastructural and teacher deficits confronting the policy, the support of the council through infrastructure development in schools would be welcome.
He explained that the free SHS policy was a social intervention programme that needs stakeholders’ collaboration to ensure quality education and therefore called for individuals and organisations support.
“No nation has developed without taking its education seriously because education opens doors for individuals, families and the nation,“ he said.
He indicated that 93.6per cent of South Korea’s population has acquired tertiary education compared to that of Ghana’s 17per cent which government intends to increase by the year 2020.
The president of the NCPTA, Mr Alexander Yaw Danso, said the council appreciated the bold initiative taken by the government to introduce the free SHS since schools would no more chase students and parents to pay fees.
However, he said there should be an avenue to address the unintended consequences of the introduction of the policy in order to have an acceptable education structure.
