Lloris (left) being shown a straight red card the high-tempered game
TOTTENHAM Hotspurs will be kicking themselves – and Hugo Lloris, whose needless sending off cost them a game which looked in the bag until that point; both sides must now win their final three games to progress from Group B.
Things took a while to get going, Spurs dominating possession without creating much and PSV looking dangerous on the counter. But when they went ahead on 39 minutes, it was because Toby Alderweireld dithered in possession; Hirving Lozano pounced and scored with the help of a deflection.
Spurs stepped it up after that and should have drawn level when Davinson Sanchez’s goal was ruled out for offside – though Harry Kane was not interfering with play. But five minutes later they resolved the situation, Lucas Moura’s shot deflected home by Pablo Rosario.
At the break, Marc van Bommel kept his players for the maximum possible time, but whatever said didn’t work; Spurs were simply too good for PSV – increasingly so, as Christian Eriksen grew into the game. And it was he who made the second for Harry Kane, a lovely exchange with Heung-min Son allowing him to cross perfectly, and his captain did the rest.
Just as Spurs were easing home, Eriksen gave the ball away to Lozano, who headed for goal, but with a defender on either side of him. However, this did not deter Hugo Lloris, who charged out of his goal for no reason, taking the man and leaving the referee with no option but to send him off.
Minutes later, and with PSV suddenly pushing, Luuk de Jong prodded home the equaliser for a result which suits neither side. But it will be Spurs who are the more disappointed – for the second time this season, they have given away a key late goal, and barring a miracle, are on their way to the Europa League. – Eurosport
