Isaac Sackey
Two promising Ghanaian bantamweight boxers, Isaac Sackey and Wasiru Mohammed will go at each other’s throat on Saturday for the WBO Africa bantamweight title at the indoor hall of the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The hunger, grit and determination shown in the build up to the fight clearly manifest their resolve to the hold of the belt that was relinquished by WBO bantamweight world champion, Isaac Dogboe.
With the failure to produce a world champion, the WBO Africa and interim titles appear to have offered a path to Ghanaian boxers to stardom and that explains the intentions of Sackey the champion and Wasiru the challenger and national champion, ahead of the fight.
Interestingly, the combatants conquered a single foe – Raymond Commey – to win their respective titles.
But with Commey judged to be a boxer at the twilight of his career, both boxers would have an opportunity to prove to Ghanaians who is truly the best.
It will mark the first appearance for both boxers who are coming on the back of devastating stoppages of Commey.
Sackey and Wasiru fight from the Attoh Quarshie and Fit Square gyms respectively and train under some of the experienced coaches in the country.
Among the two, Sackey without doubt comes as the most experienced boxer, having won 22 fights from his 23 outings and drawn once with 19 knockouts.
Wasiru Mohammed is unbeaten in 11 fights and has nine knockouts to his credit. He is known as ‘Gyatabi’ (Cub) due to his aggressive style of boxing.
The challenger is considered a huge favourite in the bout due to the manner he has stopped a number of his opponents. ‘Gyatabi’ is an all-action fighter from the sound of the bell; jabs a little but throws countless punches and looks fearless in the ring.
So far, no opponent has found an antidote to his style and for the followers of Sackey, Saturday’s clash will be the first real test for the ‘over pampered’ ‘Gyatabi’.
Contrarily, Sackey is a boxer that jabs effectively but lacks the punching power fans believe Wasiru will rely on to stop him.
The event christened ‘Ultimate Expose 2’ is organised by E&J Promotions and will attract fees of GH¢100.00, GH¢50.00 and GH¢20.00 at VVIP, ringside and regular seats.
According to the organisers, a press conference and weigh-in will be held at the Alisa Hotel tomorrow.
