The Coordinating Director of Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), Mike Owusu Amoako has enjoined Persons living With Disabilities (PWDs) to invest their share of the District Assembly Common Fund in lucrative ventures in order to improve their livelihood.
This, he said would put them on the pedestal to assert their independence and contribute to national development.
The 1992 Constitution allocates three per cent of the DACF to persons living with disabilities.
Mr Amoako gave the advice here on Friday when the assembly disbursed items to the first batch of 50 members of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations.
The assembly further paid the school fees of 21of them and the medical bills of eight others. The total amount was GH¢214,720.90.
The Coordinating Director urged PWDs who beg for alms on the streets to desist from the practice because it belittles them.
He urged them to rather register with their respective district assemblies to access the fund.
The items to be used in their businesses included ovens, hair dryers, deep freezers, refrigerators, foot sewing machines, embroidery and overlooking machines, poly tanks and barbering kits.
Each of the beneficiaries received a water filtering dispenser to provide potable water for their use.
Mr Amoako indicated that, previously beneficiaries received cash benefits but it turned out that most of them squandered it in no time, hence government in a bid to ensure they lived independently encouraged them to get education, acquire skills and request for tools to ply their trade.
“We will visit you to see how you are faring, let us know your challenges so that we can support you,” he said.
The chairman of the KKMA Common Fund Disbursement Committee, Eric Narh Annang, on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked government for the support and promised that they would put their tools to good use in order to elevate themselves from poverty and contribute their quota to national development.
He said there were about 300 PWDs in the municipality, adding that others would receive their benefits in due course.
