Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah
THE news that the government has granted financial clearance for the recruitment of 145,000 Ghanaians must gladden the hearts of many.
The announcement made by the Information Minister Designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has been long in coming because of the expectations of many Ghanaians.
Unemployment has become a very topical issue that has been discussed with many pointing accusing fingers at the government for not doing enough to reduce the menace in the country.
So the announcement is very welcoming, although the numbers to be recruited may be lower than expected and admittedly, Mr Nkrumah noted that owing to the magnitude of the situation, “more people are looking for jobs and government will continue with actions aimed at providing opportunities for them.”
It is good that financial clearance has been given and 24,033 health workers are going to be employed in addition to 9,500 in the education sector. The police will recruit 4,000 personnel with the other security agencies expected to recruit 3,527 personnel.
According to the Minister Designate, the agriculture sector will recruit 2,700, the local government sector will engage 1,049, afforestation, 20,000 and the Nation Builders Corps recruiting 100,000.
Making the announcement at a press conference in Accra yesterday, Mr Nkrumah said government was putting the economy on the right footing to spur job creation in the country.
“As we have consistently said, the first priority of this government has been to revive the Ghanaian economy and return it to a stable footing from the crisis of 2016” Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said, adding that the next step of the government’s agenda was to “deepen” its job creation initiatives in the private and public sectors.
More refreshing to hear is the assurance by the Minister Designate that “all these 145,000 persons are expected to be at post before the end of this year.”
The Ghanaian Times commends government for the efforts it is making to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth roaming the streets.
We all know the consequences of an idle hand and we are glad that efforts are being made to engage them in meaningful ventures.
We can only hope that the government will not rest on its ores but ensure that it created the economic environment for private businesses to also grow and create jobs for the citizens.
In the recent past, businesses and individuals have complained about the economic hardship in the country but it is reassuring that the government has indicated that it had restored macroeconomic stability for the take-off of the economic development agenda.
It is the wish of every Ghanaian that the economy will grow, industries will flourish, more and more people will work so that the country prospers; and we look forward to more job creations and employment in the country.
