The Enchi District Magistrate Court, in the Western Region, on Thursday, jailed a 21-year-old farmer, Iddrisu Dauda, 36 months for conspiracy, stealing and unlawful entry.
Dauda, alias, Bemta, an ex-convict, pleaded not guilty to the three counts, but, the court, presided by Mr Eric Baah Boateng, found him guilty and was sentenced to 12 months in hard labour on each count.
The sentence is to run consecutively.
Kofi Boateng, 26, a plumber, an accomplice and a first offender, pleaded guilty to the charges, and was sentenced to a fine of 100 penalty units (GH¢1,200.00), in default, he will serve 12 months in hard labour.
The prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Anim, said complainants, John Kofi Sarkwa and Kojo Mensah, auto-electrician and auto-mechanics respectively, who had their workshops at the outskirts of New-Yakasi, are residents of Enchi.
The court heard that at about 4 a.m on July 16, this year, the convicts broke into Sarkwa’s shop and stole six car batteries, all valued GH¢1,620.00.
DSP Anim said, Dauda and Boateng, went to Mensah’s shop and stole a pair of engine block-head and one gear box, valued at GH¢2,100.00, and hid them in a nearby bush.
The prosecutor said Dauda went to Enchi and engaged a tricycle rider to convey the stolen items, but a witness, who arrived at the spot with his vehicle, suspected a foul play.
DSP Anim said the witness raised the alarm and with the help of other witnesses Dauda was arrested and handed over to the police.
The court heard that on July 22, Boateng was also arrested, and in their caution statements, the convicts admitted the offences.
