The 30th anniversary of the Power Queen’s Club (PQC) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was yesterday launched in Accra.
On the theme; “ Facing change – The role of the queen”, it was aimed at creating a forum for sharing practical experiences to encourage, promote and enhance productivity of members and foster good working relations and co-operation among staff of the company.
Calling on members to prepare for the concession, Madam Maataa Opare, a board member of ECG said, the board and management were aware of the impact of the change on any individual, saying, they were working hard to reduce to the barest minimum the effect the change might bring.
“Per our lease and assignment agreement, no queen, and for that matter no staff of ECG will have her current rights and benefits diminished under the concession”, she emphasised.
The government of Ghana signed the compact II agreement with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, to allow private sector participation in the operations of the ECG with the ultimate intent of delivering reliable energy distribution, a, prerequisite to national development.
According to her, management of the concession arrangement would ensure that new policies and programmes were not only equitably designed but would infuse gender sensitivity in order to meet the peculiar needs of the queens.
Madam Opare advised the women to surmount foreseeable challenges and take advantage of opportunities, urging that the queens develop themselves to add value to their roles in the company and build the right synergies for the progress of the company.
The national president of the club, Ms Rosemond Asamoa-Frimpong urged the queens to support the management during the period of change, saying, “we have to accept and embrace change that would be introduced in the next decade and beyond”.
She further commended the management for giving equal opportunity to all staff irrespective of their gender and pledged the queens’ commitment to the Future Power distribution project.
The chairperson for the event, Engineer Carlien Dorcas Bou-Chedid urged management to encourage and support the power queens as change is about to take place at the company.
