The 1978 year group of the St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School over the weekend marked 40 years of their completion of the school with a symposium and a donation of 24 set of computers.
The move which was to climax series of activities marking the celebration also saw the commissioning of a newly refurbished Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory put up by the year group.
Held on the theme, “Getting together to project the image of our alma Mata,” the old Toms most of whom hold key positions in life took turns to counsel students particularly on morality and career paths.
President of the year group and Deputy Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority, Mr Kofi Ellis in a talk to the students reminded them that “the core of going through education is to help you make society better.”
In that regard, he charged students to be open minded, develop their knowledge consistently and uphold discipline to achieve greater heights in life.
“Read outside the academic walls to better understand how society operates so you can ably fit in. Learn to improve on your human relations and above all do not forget the God factor which is critical to see you fulfilled,” he advised.
Touching on the ICT Laboratory, Mr Ellis assured of a complete insurance cover for the facility and items therein adding that, “the association will continue to think about the school and continue to offer more token.”
The Acting Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Mr Ransford Tetteh, a member of the year group in sharing his youthful experience at the school and journey to the highest level of journalism challenged students to stay focused and determined in life.
He urged them to take advantage of modern technological tools to broaden their knowledge saying, “Social media today has made it easy to get information so use it for that instead of the wrong purposes.”
“Have good command of the English language if you want to pursue a career in media, uphold good morals and discipline at all times,” he urged.
The Headmistress of the School, Mrs Bernice Addae who was elated by the gesture of the old students encouraged students to draw inspiration from them, “work hard to excel in life so you could also give back to the school in future.”
She said the renovation of the schools ICT laboratory will enhance research activities among students.
Master Christopher Delali Dzeney, the School Prefect on behalf of the student body expressed gratitude to the Old Toms for the gesture.
‘I would like to sincerely thank the old Toms of 1978 for providing the school with a well enhanced computer laboratory. I strongly believe this praiseworthy initiative would go a long way to facilitate greater academic achievement,’ he said.
