A Muslim youth education activist is advocating the establishment of a private tuition system for Senior High School (SHS) students awaiting the November second track to prepare them for the three-year education programme.
Alhaji B. M. Adam, who made the proposal in a letter copied the Ghanaian Times yesterday, said the move would help the students to make use of the waiting period in studying the wide syllabi of their individual courses before they joined their colleagues in school.
He said this was one of strategies to empower students in Muslim communities to benefit from the double-track system introduced by government to enable the teeming qualified students’ access SHS education.
Areas including Nima, Mamobi, New Town, Mallam Atta, Abeka Lapaz, all in Accra, and other Muslim zones in the country, he said, could start the piloting of the tuition system.
The letter stated that the Muslim Youth Group of Wa, in the Upper West Region, had commenced the implementation of the strategy.
He said teaching support could be mobilised by the community leaders, Islamic non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Members of Parliament (MPs), assemblymen, the National Service Secretariat and the Ghana Muslim Students Association.
Alhaji Adam proposed the creation of a fund which would be built by an Islamic VAT component on the Hajj fare to finance the education of Muslim youths who face various financial challenges.
If properly managed, the fund, he said, would by 2025 be able to finance the education of 500 medical students, 5000 student nurses, 4000 engineering students and 3000 teacher trainees within the next 10 years in Muslim communities across the country.
It would also finance the establishment of an ultra-modern Hajj Village that could also be used as hostels for Muslim students from other regions in Accra and also serve as an Institution for Higher Arabic and Islamic Studies
