An Accra circuit court has granted GH¢56,000.00 bail with three sureties to the Chief Executive Officer of the Sonzel Shipping Company.
Frank Osei Assibey allegedly swindled a businessman of Toyota Corolla and GH¢25,000.00 under the pretext of clearing his Mercedes Benz car from the port.
The court ordered that two of the sureties should be public servants earning not less than GH¢1,000.00.
Assibey, who denied the charge of defrauding by false pretence, would appear again before court on October 22.
Inspector Mabel Atsu told the court presided by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh that Ernest Twum, a businessman, is the prosecution witness, living at Ashongman, a suburb of Accra, where Assibey’s company was located.
According to prosecution, in November 2017, Twum’s mother, who is living abroad, shipped a home-used Mercedes Benz to Ghana, to be cleared by Twum.
Insp Atsu said a witness in the case introduced Assibey to help Twum clear the car, adding that the accused charged GH¢56,000.00 to enable him clear the car from the port.
Prosecution said, Twum offered his Toyota Corolla saloon car valued at GH¢31,000 and GH¢25,000.00 for the transaction.
Insp Atsu said Assibey after receiving the money, failed to fulfil his promise, and a report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
He promised using his Hyundai Sonata car as collateral to secure loan to settle the debt, but to no avail. – GNA
