Mrs Rebecca Aufo-Addo
The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has denied any involvement in the engagement between StarTimes Corporation and the government, either directly or indirectly.
A statement from her office yesterday dismissed media reports linking her and her foundation, the Rebecca Foundation, as party to the engagement between the Chinese firm and the government.
“StarTimes has never been, at any time, a partner to the foundation as has been suggested,” the statement said, and stressed that the First Lady played no personal role in the engagement between the firm and the government
The statement said the only engagement the First Lady’s foundation had with StarTimes was when the Chinese firm decided to support a project being undertaken by the foundation.
It explained that the Rebecca Foundation, in 2017, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Licang District Experimental School at Gindao, China, to establish an exchange programme between Ghanaian and Chinese school children.
“The project, which seeks to deepen academic, cultural and sports ties between the pupils of the two countries, will see an exchange of 15 pupils each from the two countries on annual basis.
“The first group participating from Ghana this year is 15 pupils from the SOS Children’s Village Ghana,” the statement said
According to the statement, StarTimes offered to provide football kits to the children because of its association with Ghana football.
“This worthy effort, it must be stated, was not at the instance of the foundation,” the statement said, and added that the support, which was made public, was purely for charity purposes.
The statement said the foundation would continue to be guided by the strict principles of honesty, integrity and transparency.
