Mr Alan Kyerematen,Minister of Trade and Industry
The Ministry of Trade and Industry has secured GH¢2.5million for the implementation of One District One Factory programme.
The Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. John Alan Kyerematen who announced this here yesterday, said the money was secured from some local banks: GCB Bank, adb Bank and SSB Bank, among others.
He explained that the money was meant to support private businesses and companies ready to partner government to establish factories under the one district one factory programme.
Mr. Kyerematen who was speaking at one of the plenary sessions of the National Policy Summit, called on private investors to avail them of the package.
The summit which is under the theme, ‘Assessing government’s flagship programmes’ was organised by the Ministry of Information.
It is designed to bring together policy makers and business leaders in order to explore mutually beneficial ways of achieving the national objectives.
The summit was also meant to promote social accountability in the public policy cycle.
Mr. Kyerematen explained that the government was not going to establish the one district one factory by itself but to lobby and support private companies to do so.
He stated that the rate at which the country was importing basic things into the country was disturbing and that the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was committed to reducing the importation of those goods, hence the urgent step to establish the factories in the district.
The minister questioned why the country still imports simple things such as mosquito coil, and handkerchiefs.
Mr. Kyerematen therefore entreated all to support the President to realise the one district, one factory policy which was meant to address poverty in the country.
He said that the public sector was so exhausted and there was the urgent need to grow the private sector and that was one of the surest ways to establish factories across the length and breadth of the country.
The minister assured that the government would only facilitate the establishment of factories but would help get sustainable market for products of those factories.
The Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Madam Hawa Koomson on her part indicated that work on the construction of one village one dam has been completed in some communities.
She added that the ministry was liaising with the chiefs and other stakeholders to derive maximum benefit from the initiative.
Many of the participants urged government to ensure that good policies such as Planting for Food and Jobs and one village one dam are not hijacked by the few rich and politicians.
