The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Accra Technical University (ATU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable the latter use the metropolis as a laboratory for academic work.
The AMA would grant ATU access to its offices, sites and data on the metropolis for research and practical purposes as well as create internship opportunities for students and staff.

According to Mr Sowah, the collaboration between academia and government was important to the socio-economic development of the country as it would utilise research findings from academia.
Referring to similar arrangements in Scandinavian countries, he said both institutions would benefit from the collaboration and urged for commitment to their respective responsibilities.
Prof Ameko, for his part, said the collaboration would enable the university help the AMA resolve issues with sanitation and traffic, which were amongst the major challenges in the metropolis.
He said community extension services, was part of the university’s mandate and that it was time for ATU to be more useful to the community.
He said a joint applied research would be conducted as part of the collaboration adding that research groups would be set up as soon as possible.
“This is just the beginning of a fruitful relationship to help develop the country,” the professor said.
