The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has formed a five-member taskforce, to remove all illegal structures erected on land reserved for road construction in the Ashanti Region.
This was in compliance with GHA Act 540 of 1997, which seeks to protect land reserved for the building of roads by the GHA.
The team is led by the Regional Safety and Environmental Officer, Nurudeen Moomin, and other members are: the Regional Auditor, Mr Albert O. Amon, the Regional Surveyor, Mr Elorm Fiagbey, Regional Administrator, Mr Michael Turkson, who is also the Secretary to the team, and Nana Ninsin Imbeah, chairman of GHA Retired Staff Association in the region.
A statement signed by the Director of Ashanti Regional GHA, Christian Nti, said the taskforce has been mandated to remove all illegal structures sited on land reserved for roads with immediate effect, in order to prevent further encroachment on such land.
It was also mandated to demand and inspect permits for all filling stations sited within the region, and be made to pay the appropriate charges that had been stated in the Fees and Charges Amendment Instrument, 2016 currently in force.
The statement indicated that the taskforce would also identify persons who have carried out illegal evacuation with the road corridor without a written permission from authorities in the region, and offenders would be charged and prosecuted for illegitimate destruction of public properties.
It urged all stakeholders to assist the team as it takes steps to protect public land and assets.
