President Akufo-Addo, having a feel of the potato chip
Production has commenced at the Potato Processing Factory at Gomoa Bewadze in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region to address the unemployment situation as well as ensuring food security in the country.
The company, Casa De Ropa Company Limited, a wholly-owned Ghanaian private agribusiness institution, spearheading the path, is under the One-District-One-Factory initiative.
Financed by the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, the company had started producing bread, chips, and other pasteries from the potato variety, ‘the Orange flesh sweet potato’, for the consumption of the public.
This came to light when the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid a visit to the factory as part of his tour of the Central Region.
During his brief interaction with the management, the President tasted some of the chips and other products that have been made out of the potatoes.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the factory, Ebenezer Obeng Baffoe, during a recent visit by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, explained that,
the project yet to be completed is already changing the lives of the people in the Gomoa area.
“The factory would be completed by the end of this year. We are not waiting for the factory building to start before we start business. Our raw materials are in abundance,” he said.
Additionally, he stated that: “We have cultivated over 300 acres of potato”.
The company, he explained, have over 800 acres of land that management was still cultivating.”
Mr Baffoe further indicated that potato processing would soon assume a revolution because of the health, economic and other benefits associated with it.
“It has vitamin A and that is very good for children and help people who react negatively to artificial sugar,” he said.
The company, he explained, does not add sugar to any of its products and stated that, the economic potentials are overwhelming.
President Akufo-Addo in his brief comment expressed overwhelming confidence in the potentials and benefits that would be derived from the factory.
He noted that, the establishment of the factory would help transform rural communities in and around Gomoa Bewadze.
He explained that the potato industry could be a great game changer if given the needed attention and resources.
He indicated that, the economy would benefit significantly looking at the enormous potentials of the potato processing sector.
“This is a real game changer and it represents what I have been preaching about growing what we eat and eating what we grow,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo further reiterated the government’s commitment in offering all the support needed for the thriving of the factory.
The government, he said, would continue to empower the private sector in order for the sector to spearhead the provision of jobs and the production of food for the local economy.
He said, “The idea about the One-District-One- Factory will help propel the transformation of this nation and I am delighted at the progress of Casa De Ropa in manifesting the idea behind the initiative.”
He noted that, the one-district-one-factory initiative was aimed at the facilitation of jobs and the production of food for the consumption of the people.
President Akufo-Addo further explained that, the government was on course in changing the narrative of Ghanaians that, it was possible to transform the nation by the contribution of all citizens.From David O.
