Mr Boahene inspecting one of the water sprinklers
The Accra Sports Stadium pitch is 80 per cent complete and will be ready for use in a month’s time, Managing Director of Green Grass Technologies Sports Services (GGT), Mr Frank Boahene has said.
The pitch will be used for the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be hosted by Ghana from November 17 to December 1 alongside the El Wak Sports Stadium, Presec Park, Legon, Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Robert Mensah Stadium, and the Nduom Stadium pitches.
Work began on the pitch two months ago with the scrapping of old and wornout grass.
It was part of a major rehabilitation work being carried out on the entire facility to stage the women senior championship.
Concerns over the readiness of the facility by the deadline for contractors were quelled yesterday when the Times Sports visited the facility to observe the state of the stadium.
There was a vast transformation of the pitch with its green nearing restoration.
Workers of GGT were seen busily applying fertiliser with lawn sprinklers sprinkling water on the surface.
Mr Boahene disclosed that the playing field was 80 per cent complete and could host a game if the tournament was to start now.
He said works have reached the second and final phases which is the maintenance of the surface and added that GGT was on course to deliver a world class pitch befitting the AWCON.
“We are on track, we have an October ending deadline and we are on schedule,” he stated.
He said the pitch has almost a full grass cover with some minor spots to cover.
“The pitch is currently in a firm state and can bounce a ball, these are two critical effects needed of a modern pitch.”
Mr Boahene said his company has contracted Interplast Ghana Limited to have 20 computerised lawn sprinklers to be installed in 10 days time to help with the irrigation process.
“In a week’s time we will put a roller on the pitch to test the final level, check compassion and take out any undulating area, do further irrigation while mowing continue till tournament starts, he added.
He said the Ministry of Youth and Sports has discussed with the Ghana Water Company to ensure constant water supply to speed up the process.
On the El-Wak Stadium, he stated that the playing surface has full grass cover now and was left with some few minor works to be done, just as the Presec Park.
The CAF inspection team is expected in the country in the next few weeks for the final inspection of facilities for the showpiece.
