100 students awarded MTN scholarships
One hundred brilliant but needy students across the country have been awarded scholarships to pursue higher education.
The scholarship was presented to the students by the MTN Ghana Foundation under the MTN Bright Scholarship awards programme, started two years ago.
The beneficiaries, made up of 82 males and 18 females who are currently pursuing courses in the fields of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities in public tertiary institutions across the country and the package cover tuition and accommodation and an amount of GH?500 stipend for reading materials every semester.
Speaking at the ceremony in Accra yesterday to present the scholarship awards to the students, the Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah lauded MTN Ghana and MTN Ghana Foundation for the initiative.
He said the programme was coming at a time when the government was making efforts to provide opportunity for every Junior High School student to access Senior High School education.
Prof Yankah said the Free Senior High School policy had created an opportunity for brilliant but needy students to access free education, adding that the programme had brought relief and smiles on the faces of parents.
The Board Chairman of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Professor Franklyn Manu said the beneficiaries were among 1500 students who applied for the scholarship.
He said the objective of the scholarship which was to create opportunities for brilliant students from deprived communities and homes and for the youth to achieve their educational dreams and potentials.
“The importance of education and its impact on national development cannot be overemphasised. This is why MTN Ghana Foundation always takes the opportunity available to us to invest in more educational projects,” he said.
Prof Manu said MTN shared in the belief that educating people could help close the poverty gap in the country and improve livelihoods.
The Board Chairman said during the commemoration of SCANCOM PLC’S 20th anniversary in 2016, MTN Ghana through the MTN Ghana Foundation pledged to award 100 scholarships to students in public tertiary institutions each year for three years and the MTN Ghana Bright Scholarship programme was in fulfillment of the commitment MTN made to Ghanaians two years ago.
He encouraged women to take interest in the MTN scholarships programme, saying the participation of women was low.
Prof Manu said the MTN Ghana Foundation apart from the scholarship would complete and inaugurate other projects before the end of this year, including the completion of the New Juabeng SHS Information Communication Laboratory Project in the Eastern Region and commence work on the GIMPA Telecoms Library and construct a six-unit classroom block for Nhyiaeso Basic School in Ashanti Region.
