Prof. Mike Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament
MEMBERS of Parliament have been recalled from recess for a five-day emergency meeting, starting Monday, September 24, 2018, to consider some unfinished businesses of the last meeting.
In a letter inviting the 275 members back to the House, Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, said the lawmakers would be expected to consider “some urgent parliamentary businesses.”
“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42 (3) of the standing orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall not withstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit from Monday, September 24, 2018 to Friday, September 28, 2018 at 10 o’clock in the forenoon each day, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider among others, some urgent parliamentary businesses,” the letter said.
The House, before it went on recess in July, could not approve the proposed amendment to the controversial Africa Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI) Group power deal and that could dominate the meeting.
The House, according to Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, did not consider the amendment of the AMERI deal because the House had not been furnished with detailed information about the deal.
It was also unable to approve the Right to Information Bill.
Also pending before the House is the vetting of some ministerial nominees and the report of the Appointments Committee on four Supreme Court Justice nominees who have already appeared before the Committee.
The recall, initially planned for September 10, had to be rescheduled because the leadership of the House were on various international engagements.
