The government has approved a 248 million euro funding for the commencement of the construction of phase two of the Kumasi Kejetia Central Market Redevelopment Project.
The phase one of the project estimated at $249,541 million is near completion.
As the phase one is about to be handed over by the Brazilian contractor, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has inaugurated a committee to oversee the validation of the registration of shop owners.
The validation exercise, would among others, provide a master database on the identity of persons and the type of tenancy, establish accurate and comprehensive register for the allocation and management of the redeveloped Kumasi Kejetia Central Market, as well as identify the true owners of the stores to be allocated under the project.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Osei Assibey-Antwi, announced an 11-member team, which included the consultant of the project at a meeting held here in Kumasi last Friday.
Mr Assibey-Antwi urged the team to discharge its activities devoid of any political or religious considerations, stressing that “your task is to ensure that those whose data and records are with the KMA as having stalls/stores, before the redevelopment of the Kejetia market, are allocated with same through a purely transparent process.”
Mr Assibey-Antwi said registered persons would be identified biometrically from the register on the server and personal data captured on the server would be cross-checked with their current identify cards.
According to the MCE, the validation committee members had distinguished themselves in earlier work entrusted into their care and shown commitment to the course of developing Kumasi.
He, therefore, assured the traders and businessmen of fairness in the allocation since the committee working has the blessings of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Speaking after their inauguration, Nana Boateng, assured the public of carrying out a process that would be transparent to all, saying “we will carry out our work without bias, preferences or political considerations”, and stated that the process of allocating the stalls to persons whose data had been captured by the KMA was a decision by the Asantehene.
This, he noted, imposed a great degree of sincerity on all committee members to ensure the process of allocation was done seamlessly and flawlessly.
The members of the committee are Nana Agyenim Boateng (chairman), Nana Owusu Afriyie, Alex Sarfo Kesse , Juliana Nsiah, Deborah Okrah, Theresa Osei Tutu, Patrick Adu Poku, Yaa Foriwaa, Yvonne Nabo and two others to be named later.
