Chief of Tehey, Nene Mensah Zortovi V, burnt to ashes
One mourner, Ofori Sabbah, 40, was shot dead and the corpse of the Chief of Tehey, Nene Mensah Zortovi V, was burnt to ashes on Saturday when a rival faction attacked mourners during a procession to bury the latter on a disputed land at Tehey, a suburb of Sege in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region.
The attackers wielding guns and other dangerous equipment shot sporadically to scare the mourners away before setting the hearse conveying the remains of the 67-year-old chief on fire.
Several other mourners sustained various degrees of injury and they are being treated at the Ada East District Hospital.
Police said the charred body of the late Nene Zotorvie V and the bullet riddled body of Ofori Sabbah have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary in Accra, for autopsy.
The incident is suspected to have resulted from a dispute over a parcel of land between the Zortovie family of Tamatoku and some indigenes of Tehey.
One of the factions had secured a court injunction on Tuesday, September 11 to restrain the late chief’s family from burying him in his house at Tehey.
However, the court order was only served on the bereaved family late Saturday at the funeral grounds at Tamatoku in the Ada East District.
The bereaved family after studying the injunction, decided to go ahead and bury the late chief at Tehey.
This turn of event angered the Zortovie family who accosted them on their way to the cemetery.
The following day, the remains of Sabbah was found with bullet wounds surrounded by broken cement blocks believed to have been used to pelt the body in an uncompleted building when police in the company of the Ada West District Chief Executive, Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi, and officials of the Bureau of National Investigation went there on a fact finding mission.
Meanwhile, speaking to the Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joseph Darkwah, yesterday he said the police was investigating the matter however no arrest had been made yet in connection with the incident which had virtually turned Tehey into a ghost town.
