The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has denied reports indicating that Ghana has been stripped of the hosting rights of the 2018 Africa Women’s Championship (AWCON).
A statement from the continental football regulators did not confirm the report.
It, however, stated that the final decision will be taken next month when a meeting of the tournament’s organising committee is held in Egypt.
CAF is unimpressed with the pace of preparation for the tournament, especially the slow tempo of renovation works at the Accra Sports Stadium.
That is believed to have generated the debate over Ghana’s readiness to host the championship.
CAF President Ahmad Ahmad disclosed in Tanzania over the weekend CAF’s intention to look for new hosts for the championship.
Kenya, which was considered as one of the potential replacement with South Africa, wrote to CAF indicating their uneasiness to stage the women showpiece.
But according to the CAF statement, “the subject will be discussed at the next meeting of the Organising Committee for Women’s Football to be held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
“The final decision will be taken by the CAF Executive Committee at its meeting on September 27-28, 2018 in Egypt.”
