More than 150 illegal structures on the Accra-Nsawam railway lines have been earmarked for demolition by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) by the end of November, this year.
The exercise which had already began from Accra, would pave way for railway expansion projects in the country.
The Deputy Managing Director in charge of Engineering, of the GRCL, Dr Micheal Adjei Anyetei told the Ghanaian Times yesterday on the sidelines during a meeting with residents at Kotoku in the Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA), in Accra.
The meeting was aimed at discussing the expansion project and decongestion of areas along railway lines in the area.
The meeting brought together the Municipal Chief Executive, GWMA, Mr Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson, Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh, assembly members and traditional rulers among others.
He said structures which include kiosks, buildings among others within 100 feet near the rail lines would be demolished.
The Minister for the Ministry of Railway Development, Mr Joe Ghartey, stressed the need to demolish the structures to pave way for the expansion projects on the railway lines.
He said the illegal activities near the railway lines posed danger to human lives which must be avoided.
The Minister said some people have been killed and maimed by trains over the years which needed to be prevented.
He said the demolition exercise would be done with human face and human touch.
Mr Ghartey said the railway transportation was expected to be expanded to areas such as Kumasi and Paga in the Upper East Region to boost transportation in the country.
“The railway sector had been identified as very crucial for the development of every country,” he added.
He said 720 people would be employed to work on the current railway project in the country.
The Minister urged the workers to work hard to ensure the completion of the project on the stipulated time.
Mr Wilkinson said the railway project when completed would help in the transportation of goods from the area to other regions.
He said the sector would also create jobs for the indigenes in the municipality.
The MCE called on the residents to support the Ministry in the completion of the rehabilitation project at Kotoku.
Mr Annoh-Dompreh said railways transportation was working in other country, stating that as a country we need to put in steps to make the sector active to help in the transportation of the country.
“As a country we have to lay the foundation in the railway sector for the future generation,” he stressed.
