Alateyvi Gideon, a trader, was yesterday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old primary six pupil by an Accra circuit court.
The convict, also known as Gideon Kwame, was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to the offence of defiling girl (name withheld).
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector of Police Kofi Atimbire told the court presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Doku that Gideon took advantage of the girl, who fetches water from the house, where accused rented a room.
He said the girl, now an expectant mother, was sent by her mother, Mrs. Rita Kedzi in April 2018, to fetch water in the house, and accused sent the girl to take his mobile phone from his room, and she obliged.
Chief Insp. Atimbire told the court that Gideon entered the room, pushed the teenager onto his bed, covered her mouth and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
The court heard that convict gave Djamado GH¢10 and warned her that she would die if she disclosed the act to anyone.
Chief Insp. Atimbire said the girl, fearing for her life, kept the ordeal to herself until the evening of Sunday, July 22, 2018, when the mother noticed changes in her daughter, and conducted a pregnancy test on her.
He said the test proved that the girl was four months pregnant, adding that the victim later mentioned convict as the person responsible for the pregnancy.
On July 25, Chief Insp. Atimbire said the mother of the child lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the Tesano Police Station, and Gideon was arrested.
He said a medical report was issued to the victim to seek medical treatment at the Police Hospital.
The prosecutor told the court that the convict admitted the offence in his caution statement, but added that the girl consented to the act.
