The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) in the Greater Accra Region yesterday held a durbar to honour the West African Senior High School (WASS) and the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) for their sterling performance at the just ended 2018 National Maths and Science Quiz competition.
WASS the second placed school received GH5000 from the assembly. The Member of Parliament (MP), Alhaji Abubakar Boniface Saddique added GH 3000.00 with PRESEC receiving GH4000 to purchase educational materials to boost teaching and learning.
Presec had previously won the competition five times but was eliminated before the quarter finals, while WASS placed second in this year’s event.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the Assembly, Mrs Jennifer Dede Adjabeng commended WASS for making the area proud and assured of providing the necessary infrastructure to enable the school improve its academic performance and win next year’s competition.
“You have given the area the bragging rights, the assembly would forever be grateful and wish to assure you that every assistance would be provided the two schools to enable them meet in next year’s finals,” she added.
Alhaji Boniface Saddique said the ceremony was to appreciate the achievement of the schools and urge them to put extra effort in the next year’s competition in order to be the ultimate winners.
He said WASS was underestimated and undermined at the beginning of the competition but pulled the biggest surprise of the year and urged the students to be guided by the principles of discipline, perseverance and determination to ensure that they excel in all endeavours.
Alhaji Boniface Saddique assured that more resources would be allocated to the schools to address their challenges and implored the students to pay special; attention to their tutors and hinted of instituting a scholarship scheme to support brilliant but needy students.
The Former Board Chairman of WASS, Professor Clement Somuah charged the students to aspire to the highest academic ladder, adding that WASS has a heritage to protect.
He said the sparkling performance of the school at the competition has changed public perception of the school and urged the students not to lose hope for not winning the trophy but use the current situation to win the competition next year.
The headmaster, Mr Ofori Antwi in his welcome address said the competition had given the school some food for thought and assured that everything would be done to improve the academic performance, adding that the school is on course to achieve 100 per cent in all academic and social activities, “what we need is a little push and support from our stakeholders.”
He appealed to the authorities to evict squatters who have settled close to the school’s premises and urged the past students to help raise the walls of the school.
