Students of Bukpurugu Senior High and Technical School in the Bukpurugu District of the Northern Region have their meals in the open due to the lack of a dining hall.
Totalling about 1,000, they are crowded during mealtime at the school compound at the mercy of the sun and insects.
They stand and eat as the dining tables are without chairs or benches. The tables have begun to deteriorate due to constant exposure to the sun.
Checks by the Ghanaian Times revealed that in the rainy season, they are compelled to either eat in their classroom or dormitory, a situation which was impeding smooth academic work.
Mr Mohammed Ayanah, the headmaster of the school told the reporter that the situation sometimes made education unattractive.
“Due to the implementation of free Senior High School (SHS) programme, we are receiving students from different part of the country which we need decent infrastructure to make learning attractive,” he said.
Mr Ayanah pleaded with the government and stakeholders to help the school complete its multipurpose dining hall which could serve as assembly hall and host various activities as well.
Some of the students in an interview with the Ghanaian Times complained about how the situation affected their academic hours by spending many hours during dinning.
