The suspects
Four foreigners have been arrested by Operation Vanguard Joint Task Force at Broniamah, a community in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region, on Tuesday, for allegedly engaging in illegal mining popularly called ‘galamsey’.
The suspects, one Chinese, Lin Chanquo, 44, and three Togolese, Kwame Musah 28; Kombete Kudjo ,48 and Ano Nabro, 21, were arrested together with their Ghanaian counterparts Osumanu Yakubu, 27, and Inusah Issah, 25.
They have been handed over to the Manso Amenfi police for further investigations and prosecution.
The Public Relations Officer for Operation Vanguard, Squadron Leader Robison Omane Agyei told the Ghanaian Times that during the operations, the team seized immobilised Hyundai excavator with chassis number K3R000033 on the site and a Liungong excavator with chassis number CLG0956DC052066 and conveyed them to Wassa Amenfi District Assembly.
Other items seized by the team included one locally-manufactured single barrel gun, one Toyota hilux pickup truck with registration number GT 8131-13, one water pumping machine, and 11 mobile phones.
Earlier, Sdn Leader Agyei revealed that the Western Region Forward Operating Base (FOB) on Thursday, arrested 12 persons in the Furi Forest at Kutukrom in the Prestea Huni Valley District.
The FOB, he said, destroyed 12 excavators, seized other mining equipment and handed them over to the Prestea District Police for further investigation.
“With these operations we have the total number of arrests being 1,205 with 5,134 changfa’s immobilised, 74 vehicles and 78 motor cycles, 107 arms and 2,344 ammunition, and 228 excavators seized.”
“The Task Force is sending a stern warning to illegal miners to desist from the act or we are coming after them wherever they are hiding. We believe some miscreants are out there using the name of OV to extort monies from illegal miners. The illegal miners are not able to complain, because, they are doing an illegal act.
“We must all ensure that we support government to sanitise the mining sector for the benefit all. We also call on the support of well meaning Ghanaians not to relent on the information they bring to OV. Let us all help save Ghana now for a better future.”
