The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all its regional, metropolitan and district education units to with immediate effect ensure that all staff who are due retirement, vacate their post.
A memo signed by the Director-General of the GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwaah asked the heads of education to ensure strict compliance to the directive including all basic and second cycle schools.
“The attention of management has been drawn to the fact that some officers who have proceeded on compulsory retirement are still at post despite an earlier directive for them to do so per a letter dated the 5th June, 2017.”
“Officers who have submitted their applications on the correction of date of birth but are due for retirement should leave their position while waiting for the outcome of the decision of management,” the statement directed.
It further asked all retired staff to hand over all properties in their possession “in their own interest and proceed on compulsory retirement immediately”.
Meanwhile, members of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), have expressed their resolve to comply with the GES directive.
Speaking to Citi News, the Secretary of CHASS, Reverend Abraham Osei Donkor, said the officers involved have been notified to take the necessary action.
“Apart from the normal reminder letters that inform all those who are due for retirement within the year, I think some letters came to some officers informing them of some discrepancies in their date of births. Either their records do not match that of the record with the service or something else.
Those officers concerned have been informed, and they were to respond to the service by confirming with some requested documents within the period or count themselves having retired at the end of March,” he added.
