A total of 74 drivers were convicted to fines of GH¢19,222 for the past two years at Nsawam in the Eastern Region, Chief Superintendent Felix Apedo, the District Police Commander has disclosed.
He said they were arrested for wrongful parking, excessive speeding, overloading, using of expired documents, driving without license and driving of rickety vehicle among others.
Similarly 98 accidents with 33 fatalities were recorded by the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit in 2017 by the Command, as against 143 the previous year.
Chief Supt Apedo disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in an interview here yesterday, stressing on the need to avoid reckless driving to reduce carnage on the roads and to save lives and properties.
He said as part of efforts to ensure sanity on the roads, the Command would continue with its vigorous education programmes to drivers.
The Commander said the command would also collaborate with various transport unions and other stakeholders, such as the media, to ensure that the roads were safe for pedestrians and commuters.
He said more personnel would be deployed on the roads to ensure sanity.
Chief Superintendent Apedo urged the drivers to collaborate with the personnel to save lives and properties, advising drivers to service their vehicles frequently.
“Drivers must endeavour to abide by the road safety regulations to save precious lives and properties,” he added.
The Commander said pedestrians should use designated routes such as zebra crossings and traffic lights to avoid being hit by the vehicles.
