The suspects
THIRTEEEN suspects, including two women, were arrested by the police in an anti-robbery swoop, at Aflao in the Volta Region, at dawn yesterday.
This followed growing public outcry in the border town over activities of narcotics dealers, who often posed as personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Bureau of the National Investigations (BNI), and accosted travellers.
The criminals offered to assist unsuspecting travellers to cross the frontier into Togo through unapproved routes at night, and robbed them of their belongings.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nana Asomah, confirmed the story to The Ghanaian Times.
He said that one of the women, Gifty Gbadegbenyo, was nabbed together with her husband, Freedom Ayivi, in their house, where a search conducted in their rooms led to the discovery of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and some “whitish” substance.
The other woman, Ella Dan, 27, was also arrested together with Wisdom Amedume, 19, after they were found to be in possession of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, the regional police commander added.
He gave the names of other suspects who were also found to be in possession of the dried leaves, as Kwaku Fiamado, 18, and Gilbert Ahiaba, 19.
The regional police commander said that the remaining suspects were arrested for impersonating BNI officials and robbing travellers, especially those travelling from Kumasi to Lome.
He gave the names of the suspects as Richard Akali, 26, also known as Agogo, Etse Dogbe, 30, Tamakloe Kwashi, 28, Raphael Agbodeka, 34, Kofi Akpatsa, 36, Paronvi Kumado, 25, and Ashinyo Bogah, 29.
DCOP Nana Asomah expressed concern over the rising number of women involved in crimes in Aflao, and warned the police would be firm, swift and ruthless in enforcing law and order in the area.
“We are now screening the suspects who were brought into police custody in Ho soon after the operation”, he said.
