Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has disclosed his intentions to contest for the party’s national chairman position.
Members of the NPP will go to Congress in August this year to elect national officers, and Mr Blay wants to be the substantive Chairman of the party.
He has been serving in an acting capacity since the removal of Mr Paul Afoko in 2016.
However, Mr Blay said his immediate concern is to work towards the success of the Akufo-Addo administration.
While interacting with journalists, he called on other members of the party to support the government to succeed.
“I will say never say never. What I will tell you is that, that is not my main focus at the moment. We have a little more than just six months that we have been in power.
“The presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will succeed if the party should be fully behind him,” he said.
Mr Blay indicated that the party organised to win the election and charged supporters to be behind the government so that it will fulfill the expectations of Ghanaians.
“I think that should be the focus for now. It’s too early for us to rush because we barely just came from an election.
“I wouldn’t tell you right now that I’m going for the election but it’s only a bad soldier who doesn’t want to be the general of the army.
“So God willing if things go on well, I will seriously consider it, but at the moment my focus is to help the government achieve its objectives,” he added.
Mr Blay is currently the chairman of the board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
He is a lawyer, a politician and was a Member of Parliament for Ellembelle on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
Mr Blay served as the First Deputy Speaker in the fourth Parliament of Ghana and lost his seat in the general election held on December7, 2008, to Mr Armah Kofi Buah of the National Democratic Congress.
Mr Blay resigned to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after being criticised by some CPP stalwarts for not campaigning for the then CPP flagbearer, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, but instead endorsing the NPP’s presidential candidate then, Nana Akufo-Addo. –citifmonline.com
