The suspects
Six Nigerians, who allegedly kidnapped a 21-year-old woman, have been arrested by the police at Nungua in Accra on Sunday.
Steven Johnson Chimaroke, the leader of the gang, was reported to have raped the victim (name withheld), who was observing the Holy Ramadan (month of fasting).
Other accomplices, are Ike Amechi, Anthony Emmanuel, Godfred Alex, Koyode Ayodele and Opious Ouner were reported to have also mocked and assaulted their victim during the kidnap.
The victim allegedly came in contact with Chimaroke through the social media platform (Facebook), and they became friends.
Chimaroke on Sunday invited the woman, under the pretext of giving her gift on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, but locked her in a room and sexually abused her.
The Accra Regional Police Operations Officer, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, who confirmed the story to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, said that the suspects were in police custody assisting in investigations.
He said when the woman arrived at the suspects’ house at Nungua, they smashed her mobile phone, and Chimaroke raped her, while the others looked and made fun of her.
Chief Supt. Ofori said they later soaked gari for her to eat and locked her in the room.
Chief Supt. Ofori said the victim managed to call her brothers at about 2pm with another phone she had hidden in her dress.
He said the victim’s brothers reported the matter to the police, and personnel from Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of the Accra Regional Police Command and the Lake Side Police Command invaded the premises of the suspects and rescued the victim.
Chief Supt. Ofori said the police found a bowl of soaked gari, which the kidnappers gave to the victim.
He said the suspects have been charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit crime.
Chief Supt. Ofori said the victim told the police that the suspects told her that her ordeal was revenge, adding that some Ghanaians maltreated their brother when he visited Ghana some months ago.
