Two suspected robbers, said to have been armed with AK 47 assault rifles, have been killed by the police, following a fierce gun battle between a gang and the police at Agyaagyekrom off Asuadee road at Manso Nkwanta, in the Ashanti Region.
The deceased and three other accomplices, who are on the run, according to the police, were said to have planned a robbery on a gold dealer (name withheld) at Manso Nkwanta on June 20, 2017 at about 5:00 am.
The bodies of the deceaseds, between 30 and 35 years old, have been deposited at the Agoroyesum Hospital mortuary for identification.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP) Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku , Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, confirmed the story to the media.
He said, the police in Manso Nkwanta had a tip off about the alleged planned robbery on their victim, who was to conduct business with his workers on that day on Asuadee road.
ACP Ampofo-Duku said the police ambushed the five robbers, who emerged at the spot with two of them wielding pump action guns and a locally manufactured pistol to attack the gold dealer.
As the victim approached, two of the suspects immediately shot at his vehicle but narrowly missed him.
According to ACP Ampofo-Duku, the suspects shot at the police, and the police returned fire, and the two suspects were killed on the spot as the other three suspects managed to escape.
He said the police retrieved a locally manufactured pistol, one BB Cartridge and a dagger (knife) at the crime scene.
ACP Ampofo-Duku urged the public, operators of health facilities and traditional healers to report any suspicious people, who would report to them for services to the police.
He said they are believed to have sustained gun wounds and might be seeking for medical attention.
