A thanksgiving service was yesterday held at The Qodesh, the Headquarters of the Lighthouse Chapel International, in Accra, in honour of the late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama.
The four-hour service was characterised by songs which sought to encourage the bereaved family especially the widow, Mrs Barbara Mahama, to be steadfast in this trying moment.
A prayer was said for the family and the country.
The 32-year old deceased joined the Cantonments branch of the church in September 2012 where he worshipped with his wife and two children until his demise.
Among dignitaries at the service were the Senior minister, Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo ; Defence Minister, Mr Dominic Nitiwul and Chief of Defence Staff , Lieutenant General Obed Akwa.
Bishop Eddie Fabian, Bishop of the Qodesh, delivering a sermon on the theme “Do not lose your song in the night”, said music was a powerful tool and should be used to strengthen each other in tragic moments.
He said Christians were endowed with songs of praise which they must not stop singing even in difficult situations and to buttress this , quoted psalm 30: 5 which states “Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning”.
Quoting other bible verses and raising one song after the other, he said God had put angels in charge of Christians and that He (God) permitted the death of the late Major Mahama.
Bishop Fabin recounted how he lost his parents and sibling, one after the other in a short period of time and assured the bereaved family of God’s protection and overwhelming favours.
“I want to encourage you Barbara (Widow)-God will see you through the night,” he said.
A tribute from the Cantonment branch of the church described the Late Major Mahama as a dedicated member of the church, who upheld his personal dignity by not taking the life of his attackers, in defence.
“We have lost a soldier of the army of the Lord. You have fought a good fight”, it said.
The late Major Mahama (then Captain) was lynched and partly burnt by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi, in the Upper Denkyira of the Central Region, on May 29, after he was allegedly mistaken for an armed robber, while jogging.
He was given a state burial on Friday, June 9 with “full military honours” at the Osu Military Cemetery, after a burial service at the forecourt of the State House.
Final funeral rites would be held at Bole in the Northern Region from June 13 to 15, 2017 and Tumu in the Upper West Region from June16 to 18, 2017 respectively.
About 50 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the murder, out of which some have been remanded in police custody.
