The Green Ghana initiative, geared towards greening Ghana, could suffer a serious setback if attempt is not made to restrict and control invasion by stray animals especially cattle on the streets.
The initiative, which is towards planting five million trees across the country stands to suffer, particularly in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, considering how stray animals have virtually taken over the streets, including the Regional Coordinating Council in Sekondi.
Days after the Green Ghana initiative was launched, which saw many, including corporate organisations, planting different species of trees, stray animals are seen roaming the streets of the metropolis destroying them.
Efffiakuma, Sekondi and the Paa Grant Roundabout leading to Sekondi, and the frontage of the RCC, are places the stray animals are mostly seen competing with commercial vehicles for space.
The nonchalant attitude of both the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) to restrict and control the movement of these animals has resulted in them threatening the green Ghana initiative.
Last week, on the day scheduled for the planting of the trees, the Chairman of Ras Tafari Council chapter in the region, Kwame Malcolm, sounded the alarm when he called on the authorities of the two assemblies to do something about the presence of stray animals on the street.
Kwame Malcolm, a Broadcast Journalist, was of the view that if the two assemblies failed to control stray animals on the streets, the Green Ghana initiative will not be successful.
For this reason, he wanted the EKMA and STMAA to do the needful by ensuring that the trees that had been planted in the metropolis were protected from stray animals.
Speaking during the tree planting exercise, as part of the national exercise to plant 5 million trees, the RCG-WR Chairperson wondered if the exercise would not be in futility, considering the presence of stray cattle on the street.
“If you look at the nonchalant attitude of EKMA and STMA in dealing with stray animals, one cannot be wrong to say that all our sweat will be in futility… look at how EKMA and STMA look on helplessly as stray cows take over our neighbourhoods… they are looking on helplessly despite the numerous pleas and complaints. Now we are here in the rains planting trees and the stray cows will just come eat and negate all that we have planted.”
Underscoring how members of the Ras Tafari Council faithful were nature-lovers and conservationist, he added, “As Ras Tafari, naturally we love nature, the more reason we have thrown the comb away and wear our hair in locks. Most of us are vegans; we love nature and planting a lot, hence, you see most of us farmers.”
Ras Malcolm, therefore, asked all to respect biodiversity practices and laws to protect our environment.
