The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh has held a crunch meeting with the Governor of Bank of Ghana (BoG) and other stakeholders to discuss how to arrest the burgeoning security concern arising from attacks on bullion vans and police personnel on escort duties.
The IGP met with the Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, Ghana Association of Bankers and Managing Directors of banks to brainstorm on how to minimise the risks associated with moving cash in the country.
The discussion was in response to the alleged murder of a police officer on escort duty by unknown armed men last Monday, June 14, 2021.
A press release issued yesterday and signed by Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, outlined some of the conclusions on the discussion.
According to the statement, emphasis had been placed on the need for commercial banks to implement the use of standardised equipment for specie and cash transit (CIT) services by June 30, 2021.
“This will include services outsourced by the banks to any company that performs CIT duties,” it said.
Prior to this decision, the Police Administration had earlier threatened the Association of Bankers that it will withdraw its personnel assigned to them for escort duties if they fail to procure fortified armoured vehicles to ensure officers’ safety.
