The unsolved murder of the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Tema Port of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mrs Josephine Asante, by the Police, has been thrown into jeopardy, following the death of suspect Richard Kwame Agyei.
Though Police sources claim the death of Richard Agyei in a motorcycle accident in the Volta Region will not hamper the determination of the case, legal minded observers believe the opposite.
Incidentally, Mrs Asante’s death took place around the same time as Ahmed Suale, the undercover investigative journalist of Tiger Eye PI fame, which is another unsolved murder.
On Saturday, January 12, 2019 Mrs Asante attended a GPHA senior staff end of year get-together held at the second floor of the GPHA Towers, near the Port of Tema.
When the party was over, she was driven in her private car by the authority’s official driver, Amos Apeku, and a few minutes to midnight, she had a call on her cellphone from a lady former school mate, which was the last call to her phone.
At the Michel Camp gate, Amos, the driver, was reportedly made to get down, since he lives nearby, for it was late and after midnight.
Mrs Asante now went behind the steering wheel, drove through the heavy security manned gate of the estates and into her house, after using her remote sensor to open the automatic gate.
The house boy was alleged to have collected a parcel from Mrs Asante, which he deposited at the kitchen and went to sleep in his boy’s quarters.
An unusual noise at about 03:30hrs reportedly woke both houseboy and the 14-year old son of the deceased, who noticed strange occurrences such as opened doors, automatic gate went ajar and some lights switched off in the main house.
To confirm their suspicion, the houseboy alleged that he spotted a male adult ran from the direction of the house through the opened gate and was not seen again.
Few minutes later, the houseboy placed a call to the main security gate to alert the guards of the presence of an intruder to their house. Security response was swift but they did not see anybody.
When Mrs Asante was not coming out the next morning both the son and the house boy knocked on her door several times, but to no avail.
The son went to peep through the window only to find his mother lying in a pool of blood. Police investigators from the Emefs Police Station and the Tema Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took charge of the scene and applied crime scene management skills in search of evidence.
The Police, on same day, picked Christian Agyei, the houseboy and the following day Monday January 14, 2019 added Richard Kwame Agyei, a driver by profession. Her GPHA official driver, Amos Apeku, was also arrested and placed behind bars.
In the cause of the week, a statement emerged from the police in Tema to suggest that certain vital evidence was present at the scene.
This was immediately followed by a call for the docket from the Tema Regional CID to the Headquarters in Accra.
The statement, which emanated from Police in Tema, was immediately debunked by the headquarters and since then that statement from Tema has no relevance in the investigation in the murder of Mrs Asante.
Richard Agyei was on Friday January 18, 2019 granted police enquiry bail while the official driver and houseboy benefitted from court bails.
The Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters in the process of their investigation was assisted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) with analysis.
The docket on the case has since been sent to the Attorney General’s Office for advice. The Minister of National Security, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, when he appeared before the parliamentary vetting committee early this year, stated that police have solved all the high-profile murder cases in the country, except that of Ahmed Suale, the undercover journalist.
Meanwhile this very coming Sunday, June 13, 2021 will be exactly 30 months since the gruesome murder of Mrs Josephine Asante in her bedroom.
