The family of Jonathan Ahorlu, deceased, says the South Tongu District Police Commander is the reason their son died through a motor accident last Thursday.
Solomon K. Ahorlu, father of the deceased, with his other family members and some youth of South Tongu, maintain that had Chief Superintendent Thomas Owoahene Acheampong, the Commander, not tasked his personnel to allegedly manhunt Jonathan to arrest him for a quarrel with his wife, Magdalene, their 35-year-old son and friend, would not have been involved in a motor accident and died instantly, whilst he was fleeing from arrest.
Through an interpreter at Tovewokpe, a village in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, Solomon K. Ahorlu, the father of the deceased, told The Chronicle that a week before his son’s demise, the son called him on phone to intervene in a misunderstanding between him and his wife, Magdalene, who had relocated from their matrimonial home to live with her parents at Accra town, a suburb of Sogakope, South Tongu.
The couple was legally married in 2018, with two children and lived together at Accra town until sometime in April this year when the wife relocated to live with her parents.
“My son told me that, though the wife had moved out of their matrimonial home, he always had to talk to her on her mother’s phone to check on her and the children. He said the wife complained that her phone was not functioning so he could only reach her through the mother.
“Due to the distance from Tovewokpe to Sogakope, where my son and his wife lived, I called my son’s father-in-law to implore him to do well to settle whatever misunderstanding was between the couple.
“My son’s father-in-law, after listening to the couple, realised that my son, out of anger, broke the screen of his wife’s mobile phone while he was struggling to snatch the phone from her. This was because he didn’t understand why the wife, who had a phone, would rather make him reach her only through her mother’s phone. Jonathan reportedly twisted Magdalene’s wrist in the process.
“The wife reported the matter to the South Tongu District Police and the Commander reportedly sent his boys to arrest Jonathan. Jonathan, on hearing that the police were after him fled from the town to escape arrest, but sadly, on his way he was involved in an accident and died.
“Meanwhile, my son’s father-in-law told me that he went to see the Commander to allow him withdraw the matter for amicable settlement but the Commander insisted that my son ought to be brought to the station for his written statement, before he would grant that request.
The issue could have been settled at home, but for whatever reason, the Commander said no. Now, his hard heartedness has killed my son,” Solomon Ahorlu told The Chronicle through an interpreter.
But, Chief Superintendent Thomas Owoahene Acheampong told The Chronicle at his office that it was unfortunate Jonathan died the way he did, “but how can I be accused for his death when nobody was pursuing him?”
He said when Magdalene reported the husband to the police for the alleged assault and damage to her phone, she was issued a police medical form for treatment. When she returned, she told the police CID handling the case that she wanted her husband to replace her phone and pay for her medical bill.
He said, as she insisted, the father intervened, but she was adamant that she would not forgive him until he settled her.
“So the lady and the father came to my office and as the lady insisted that she would not allow the matter to die, I scheduled a day to meet the two of them and Jonathan in my office for his written statement to, at least, satisfy the wife, and then, allow the matter be settled at home; only for me to hear that the young man was involved in a motor accident and died as he was fleeing from arrest.
“The police were not on his heels,” Chief Superintendent Thomas Owoahene Acheampong explained.
“I have not sighted any previous criminal charges against him in all the dockets I have on my table so why should he escape arrest over an issue that could have been settled at home if he had accepted to come here with his wife and in-law to meet me for his written statement?” Chief Superintendent Acheampong said.
