The Ashanti Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)has tasked Presiding Members in the various Metropolitan, Municipaland District Assemblies (MMDAs) to help solve challenges affecting thecompany through education.
Mr. Maxwell Dapaah, General Manager of Customer Services at as sensitisation workshop with the Presiding Members, explained that, they are opinion leaders and stakeholders who are closer to thepeople, hence the need to collaborate with the ECG to educate the people, their colleague Assembly members intheir various Electoral areas to ensure that there is value for money in terms of delivery of services to the public.
According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is mandatedto help improve the economic growth in the country in general, byensuring that there is regular power supply in as well as extendingelectricity to various areas.
He disclosed that ECG has made a lot of strife since 1970s in serving the residents in the Ashanti region and the country, butwith challenges, hence the need to sensitize and educate the PresidingMembers to educate them on the challenges the company isfacing.
He indicated that, the ECG has its own challenges both financially,operational and Revenue collection to the extent that they have tochase the people or disconnect their power before they may attempt topay for the company to settle its debts with GRIDCo.
The General Manager also educated them on general service connections for self-help electricity projects, customers requestregistration, Energy Commission certified electricians among others. He disclosed that overloaded 161 kV Transmission lines are causingoutages following absence of Bui power point because of low waterlevel as outlined by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GRIDCo,Engineer Fred Kwabena Bediako.
The General Manager in charge of major projects stated that the ECG was working tirelessly to ensureadequate, realistic and sustainable power supply to the people in theAshanti region, hence has installed five bulk supply points inAnwomaso, Obuasi, Konongo Effiduase and Dunkwa.
He observed that such investments would help to be providing financiallysustainable and customer focus energy service by 2024 to providequality, reliable and safe electricity service to support thesocio-economic growth and develop Ghana.
Inj. Bediako expressed worry over the proliferation of illegal andunauthorised meters of ECG networks, which resulted in increases in ECGlosses on day to day basis.
He underscored that, the way forward is the construction of a 33kVfrom Anwomaso to link Kintampo towards the Northern part of Ghana andbeyond by GRIDCo by December 2021.
