The Refugee Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) last Wednesday received office equipment including computers and accessories from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support activities of the Unit.
Items presented by the United Nations Refugee Agency were six computers, two printers including one industrial one, a laptop with accessories, UPS, Office cabinet and four swivel chairs with desks.
Presenting the items in a short ceremony at the GIS National Headquarters, Country Representative for UNHCR, Ms. Esther Kiragu said the gesture was to help the Service serve the needs of Refugees better.
On his part, the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) Mr. Kwame Asuah-Takyi appreciated the gesture and assured that it would contribute to improving welfare and management of refugees in the country. The items will be distributed between the Refugee Unit in Accra and Elubo.
The Refugee Unit is currently under the Migration Management Bureau (MMB) of the GIS. The Unit collaborates with the UNHCR in the initial registration of refugees and asylum seekers, design and implementation of policies, management of refugee camps and facilitation of voluntary repatriation. It is also responsible for educating refugees on their rights and on the laws of Ghana. The Unit also facilitates the processing of necessary permits for refugees who wish to be reintegrated into the Ghanaian society.
