The Founder of the Open Arms Ministries (Jesus Chapel) in Kumasi, Apostle Kofi Nkansah-Sarkodie has waded into the controversy surrounding the seizure and destruction of excavators seized from illegal miners, saying he supports the destruction of such items by the anti galamsey military taskforce.
Saint Sark, as he is popularly called, has even recommended for consideration by the military taskforce to effectively destroy the excavators by putting salt and petrol inside the largely diesel excavators’ engines and ignite them before burning same, to ensure it is totally destroyed.
Addressing journalists at his church at North Suntreso in Kumasi, last Tuesday, on a myriad of issues in the country, Apostle Nkansah-Sarkodie was emphatic that anybody who engages in the illegal mining business, also known as galamsey, is an enemy of God and country.
He explained that the standard norm across the world is that items used for crime, when seized, are destroyed and so he does not support those calling for the seized equipment to be confiscated to the state.
Saint Sark said apart from the destruction of water bodies, vegetation cover, food crops and the like which support human life, one of the evils of galamsey is that it is destroying the future of artisanship in the country, because as the artisans are aging the youth prefer to go into illegal mining rather than learning any trade.
The minister of the gospel lamented that there are lots of foreign nationals from the sub region, apart from the Chinese, who are engaging in the illegal mining and the only way to make it unattractive is to destroy the equipment used in perpetrating the crime.
Commenting on the issue of whether moslem students should fast in boarding schools or not, Apostle Nkansah-Sarkodie wondered why this should generate any controversy or be politicised in the country.
Fasting, according to him, is “a serious business for both Moslems and Christians” and emphasised that the extent to which the issue is being dragged is not in the interest of religion.
He said the SHS was built by the Methodist but it is no longer their bona fide property, as it now belongs to the state and by extension “for all of us.” He explained that what should have been done was to have a thorough discussion between the school authorities, the PTA and the students concerned.
