Tomato farmers at Fetentaa in the Berekum West District in the Bono Region have appealed to the government to extend the ‘1-Village-1-Dam’ initiative to the area to help salvage the industry.
The farmers believe that the effects of climate change, coupled with other challenges, have made irrigation a needed intervention to improve agricultural production in the country.
The farmers appealed to the government to ensure irrigation schemes become affordable and accessible to the average farmer to enhance vegetable cultivation.
They expressed concern that to augment the insufficient rainwater, they hadbeen compelled to draw water from nearby streams to irrigate their farms.
Speaking to Sunyani-based Ark FM, Mr. Christopher Kusi, a spokesman of the farmers, indicated that if the needed seriousness was attached to tomato production, it could help the country gain more revenue, and scale down the importation of the crop from Burkina Faso.
“As farmers, we are willing to produce whatever quantities the country needs for consumption and for export, but will need government support,” he added.
