The Bishop of the Sekondi Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Rt. Rev. Daniel Degraft Brace, has appealed to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to review his tax policies in the interest of the citizenry.
According to him, people are suffering as a result of the manifold of taxes that have been imposed on them, and that the earlier the President took a second look at it, the better it would be for the nation.
“People are suffering as a result of taxes, and we need to get it right,” he said.
Speaking to journalist on the sidelines of this year’s Synod held at Dixcove in the Ahanta West Municipality, Bishop Brace said the new taxes the President had introduced were a betrayal of his 2016 campaign promises and social contract he signed, with Ghanaians to focus on production instead of taxation.
“When [the] President was campaigning in 2016, I was in Abosso. He came there, and his words were that there was money in this country, but because we didn’t have the right calibre of people governing us, it has culminated in brazen hardship on us. So I, in particular, agree with him that this country is endowed, and that if we get our acts right, things will be good for all of us.
“Regrettably, nothing significant has changed since the President assumed office, and he rather appears to be departing from his promise and rather burdening us with taxes.
“The taxes he has introduced are rather causing a lot of hardships. People are suffering, and we need to hit at it that he (Akufo-Addo) must do something about it.”
The Sekondi Diocese Methodist Bishop agreed the coronavirus had wreaked havoc on our economy. However, he said, “if you look at what is happening, I believe government must do something about it,” adding that the taxes were too many and that had culminated in hardship.
“Look at fuel, the price has increased about five times since the beginning of this year, why?”
The Synod is held every year where the ministers of the Methodist Church meet to take stock of the past year. It was attended by reverend ministers, the laity and leaders of the church.
