An officer with the Estate Unit of the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, General Sergeant Asomani Kennedy, has been slapped with a bail term in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, one to be justified by an Accra Circuit Court.
The Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Priscilla Dapaah Mireku, yesterday was told by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gohoho, that G/Sgt Asomani was currently on interdiction and being tried on four counts of defrauding by false pretences.
According to him, the accused person, between 2018 and 2019, introduced himself to numerous people, including the complainants in the case, John Takyi, Eric Apraku, Kissy Patterson and Daniel Oppong, that he was enlisting people into the Police Service.
The complainants, who work as a book seller, public servant, fire officer, and police civilian employee respectively, were assured by G/Sgt Asomani that he could recruit people into the Police Service through his protocol links.
Chief Inspector Gohoho further narrated to the court that based on this assurance from G/Sgt Asomani, John Takyi collected a total sum of GH¢62,500.00 from 25 people and handed it to the accused person.
G/Sgt Asomani was also said to have collected a sum of GH¢8,500.00 from Eric Apraku, GH¢20,000.00 from Kissy Patterson, and GH¢6,800.00 from Daniel Oppong.
However, the accused person, after allegedly defrauding the complainants under the false pretext of aiding their wards to be recruited into the security, unfortunately went into hiding.
The accused persons, on April 29 this year, caused the accused person’s arrest at his house at Kanda and handed him over to the police for investigation.
The Prosecutor said during investigation cash in the sum of GH¢33,000 was retrieved from the accused person.
The bail was based on a prayer by G/Sgt Asomani’s lawyer, Benjamin Afari, that the accused person was ready to pay, at least, GH¢30,000.00 to the complainants, including monetising some of his properties to defray the debt.
According to lawyer Afari, the total amount involved in the case was GH¢90,000.00, therefore, the accused person could only refund the amount to the complainants if granted bail.
He added that G/Sgt Asomani has a fixed place of abode and would not interfere with witnesses that the prosecution will call in the matter.
The case has been adjourned to June 8 for continuation.
