Omni Diagnostics is giving away free Covid-19 antigen test devices- Wantai Antigen Rapid Test – to interested organisations to enable them test and produce results in a real time of 20 minutes.
The idea behind this giant step is to complement the existing testing Covid-19 efforts by the country, to ensure that results are produced within a reasonable time.
The Managing Director of Omni Diagnostics, Mrs Pamela Zormelo, in acknowledgement of the havoc being caused by Covid-19, said it was necessary that the country gets support to intensify research in order to fortify itself against any uncertainty.
Launching the Wantai Antigen Rapid Test on Wednesday in Accra, Mrs Zormelo reiterated that one way to combat pandemics and epidemics in the country, and Africa as a whole, was to place importance on research for identification, containment and treatment of diseases.
Thus, she said, the launch of the Antigen Rapid Test was to complement the testing capacity of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in the country.
According to her, Omni Diagnostics was joining the Covid-19 fight with solutions for the treatment of pathogens in Africa, and was ready to partner other organisations and individuals to make it a reality.
She noted that the country did not have the luxury of time to always depend on foreign companies to solve its health issues, saying: “We have to act fast and in tandem with the rest of the world.”
Mrs Zormelo added that there was a need for African countries to prioritise research and development in pathology, indicating that the company would be doing its part to come out with modern technologies and a skilful workforce to provide quality research, diagnosis and testing services for the public.
She also disclosed that the company was giving away the device for free, but that interested organisations have to buy the accompanying kits.
The Registrar of Health Facilities Regulatory Agency, Dr Philip A. Bannor, also disclosed that the Ministry of Health was coming out with guidelines for the antigen sample testing.
He used the occasion to urge organisations that would be taking advantage of the offer to observe the laid down protocols, as well as engaging trained technicians, who will be operating the device.
