Mr. Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, AfigyaKwabre South constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is highly tipped to be the next regional Chairman of the party, has noted that Ghana does not have any provision for community service in her laws.
According to him, we do not have community service as non custodial punishment in our laws, which only talks about paying a fine, jail sentence or both, he underscored.
He was contributing his views on the 90-day jail term handed to Rosemond Brown, popularly known in social circles as Akuapem Poloo, by an Accra circuit court for publishing naked pictures of herself and son.
The incarceration of Akuapim Poloo has since generated huge discussionin Ghana’s reformation system, with some suggesting that the jail sentence is too harsh while others believe that community service would have been more suitable than a jail sentence.
Following, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah has charged scholars within the law fraternity to take steps to inculcate community service in Ghana’s laws to afford judges the option during trials and determination of cases.
“We should also know that no judge can use his or her discretion to determine legal matters without recourse to the laws of the land”, the dean of regional chairmen noted and urged Ghanaians to put their acts together towards amendment of some of our laws where necessary.
“It is time for action and less talk”, the leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party stressed.
