The people of Ho and the entire Volta Region were thrown into the state of ecstasy on April 15, 2021, when Africa World Airline landed at the new Ho Airport on a test flight with the aim of commencing commercial activities from Ho to Accra.
The usual politicking in relation to which political party built the airport was a major side attraction between the two political party members.
However, Ametsitsia Debrah of Ho Bankoe, in a traditional prayer, thanked the gods of Asogli and the Region for making it possible for the previous government to start the airport project, and the current government also making efforts to ensure that the airport becomes operational, and asked the gods to bless all these efforts and equally deal with enemies of progress that would distract the gains made so far.
The Director of the Ghana Airport Company, Mr. Yaw Kwakwa, said his outfit had inspected the facility earlier to ensure that everything was set for commercial activities to start.
He was satisfied with the enthusiasm of the people, hoping that when commercial activities start they would patronise it.
The Director of Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Charles Krakue, said efforts were being made to ensure that other commercial aircrafts would patronise the airport, which would in future operate to other regions, and disclosed that Passion Airline also showed interest in addition to Africa World Airline to operate at the airport.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, enumerated the government’s efforts to ensure that commercial activities start, saying an Emergency Operation Control Group was formed at the regional level to help ensure successful activities, and urged the people in the region to take advantage of the new transport system that would be made available to them soon to enhance their economic activities.
The Paramount Chief of Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, who is the Chief Executive of Africa World Airline, onboard the flight was hardly identified by most people at the airport because he dressed in a pilot’s uniform, and was considered a pilot and later identified as the traditional ruler of Asogli.
In his speech, he told the people about the benefits that the airport would bring to the area and the region.
Togbe Afede, filled with joy, expressed his happiness, saying the occasion was a unique one for the people of the Volta Region and Ghana.
He thanked all who made it possible for the dream of building an airport in Ho came true, particularly, former President John Dramani Mahama and the government by continuing with the project started by the previous administration.
Togbe Afede noted that the airport would serve many purposes, including economic and health among others, because it would remain the best option to evacuate accident victims with serious conditions to Accra and provide relief items to disaster victims within a matter of 20 minutes instead of road transport that would take about three hours.
He urged people who drive their cars to Accra to adopt the use of air travel to enable them save cost.
The traditional ruler explained that effective patronage of the airport was the only way to keep it in business, stressing that when that was achieved, many more opportunities would be derived from the airport, including job creation among.
Togbe Afede continued that with the establishment of the Ho Airport, a pilot training school would be established in Ho to trained interested and qualified youth as professional pilots.
He also indicated that an aircraft maintenance facility would be established in Ho for basic maintenance services, which would include servicing of other aircrafts from other countries.
He further stressed that it would mean maintenance engineers of aircraft would equally be trained in Ho, adding that it would be important for the youth to avail themselves to take up associated opportunities that would be available as a result of the airport.
